Project Focus: CO2 Stripper Reboiler 61-105 C Redesign Client: PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda (PIM)

The Challenge

The Reboiler unit at PIM was experiencing suboptimal heat exchange and localized vibration issues, leading to frequent maintenance shutdowns. Standard empirical calculations couldn’t pinpoint the internal flow maldistribution causing the inefficiency.

Our Action

CCIT performed a “Digital Autopsy” using 3D CFD modeling. We visualized the phase-change (boiling) phenomena inside the shell-and-tube heat exchanger.

  • Phase Analysis: We identified stagnant vapor zones that were insulating the tubes.
  • Redesign: We proposed a modified baffle arrangement and inlet nozzle geometry to ensure uniform flow distribution.

The Result

The redesign led to a measurable increase in heat transfer coefficient. By optimizing the internal fluid dynamics, PT PIM achieved a more stable CO2 stripping process with a significant reduction in steam consumption.
